Since 1 October 2023, it is be mandatory to use a GPS system during the practical test for driving licence B. This means you are no longer able to choose between navigating by road signs or using a navigation device during the 'independent driving' section. You can use your own phone or a GPS device provided by the examination centre. The goal is to make novice drivers aware of the coordination required to operate the GPS while driving. Source
STIB and Brussels Mobility have launched the app Floya. This app provides an overview of all mobility options in Brussels. The app user will be able to easily compare different routes and different modes of transport based on speed, affordability and sustainability. This way, they want to offer Brussels residents and commuters more convenience and flexibility. Source; Floya
The Flemish government has decided to give a premium to people who buy an electric car. The premium amounts 5,000 euros for a new model costing up to €40,000 and 3,000 euros for a second hand car. Individuals, non-profit organisations and providers of shared cars are entitled to receive one. Because the premium can only be applied for vehicles under 40,000 euros, only 31 small models are currently eligible for the premium. Source
Mobility facts 🧮
Cameras to monitor and fine mobile phone use behind the wheel will not be installed on Belgian roads for the time being. This is because not all legal privacy-sensitive questions can be answered. Cameras such as these film the people in the car, which does not comply with privacy laws. Yearly there are about 50 traffic deaths and 4,500 injuries due to mobile phone use. Source
For the first time, the number of kilometres travelled by electric bikes (3.4%) exceeded those by non-electric bikes (3.3%). The advance of electric bicycles thus continues. Electric bikes are also used for longer distances. For instance, people use an electric bicycle for 16 kilometres on average and a non-electric bicycle for 13.5 kilometres. Source

Singapore Airlines will schedule four direct flights between Brussels and Singapore from 5 April 204. This way, there will not only be a better connection to Singapore, but Belgians can travel more easily from Singapore towards Australia or New Zealand. Source
De Lijn wants to fit all their buses with safety screens by the summer of 2024. These screens protect the driver from possible physical conflicts with passengers and will allow him to drive safely in an enclosed steering position. Source
